A special kind of icky

Ok. So I just came in a while ago from walking the dogs. I am utterly surly. This weather? It's not even for the birds. It is MIS.ER.A.BLE outside. Sort of like walking through soup. With the heat and nearly 80% humidity, it feels like it's 100. Helloooooooooo! I live in frigging NEW ENGLAND! I do not like this one tiny little itsy bitsy bit. It makes me MOST unhappy and don't even get me going on what it does to my hair. Good LORD. Why bother even trying to make it look nice? Oy VAY, is about all I can say about this disgusting, horrid weather. One more day of it and then we're back to NORMAL! I seriously can't wait.

Sorry for the rant. I just have never been able to deal with humidity and it's just been so pervasive this summer. You can't get away from it except to go into air conditioning, and that's just a terribly unhealthy way to live. I honestly don't know how you people in Florida live like this. It's nauseating.

Alrighty. I'm back now. Let's talk fleurs, shall we?

My balloon flowers are ballooning all over the place!
They're just so stinkin' cute!

Despite the heat, I still have some violas and pansies blooming, too:Such happy-looking little fleurs!

Side yard is pretty with the phlox, echinacea and obedient plant:

These are two of the pots of million bells that I plunked on our upstairs neighbors' stoop.I guess it's sort of presumptuous of me to do that, but who doesn't like surprise flowers, right? They obviously are not blooming yet, but they are going to be purple! What a surprise! I know! Who'dathunkit?

And last for today, pretty coreopsis:
I'm generally not a fan of bright yellow flowers, but I'm very fond of coreopsis. I love the look of the face and the feathery leaves.

Ok...Must run. Have to get dressed like a person - am meeting a friend for lunch! I'll tell you one thing I'm not having for lunch - HOT SOUP!

Ciao!

Fabulous flowers

Today was another hot one, kids. Massachusetts is WARM this year. More than warm. HOT. HOT HOT like you would think you were in Florida. And the humidity. Oy. As we used to say in Michigan, it's close outside. Isn't that a good description of what hot and humid feels like? The air is close. (Not as in "close the door," but close as opposed to far.)

Annnnnyyywaaay, it was a sweaty day is what I'm trying to impart. I successfully avoided being outside for most of this gross ridiculousness that is our weather, but then had to water the plants (of course because I swear we must be near a drought as it has not rained in ages) and then started another project on boaty. Sanding the gelcoat that hubby put on to cover cracks here and there. Oh, and that's just a blast because there are no weird angles or anything on a boat. MAN! Not fun!

So, after THAT fiasco, here I am. We walked the doggies and then I did up a few pots of million bells that I had originally ordered for the flower boxes, but then four of the plants were not great looking and one is dead dead dead. So, the remaining ones are in cute pots out back. You know, because I don't have enough to water already! Helloooooooooo! I'm a glutton for punishment. What can I say?!

After that, I set out to photograph many of the pretties I've got going on here! There are many from which to choose, I must say!

First in vegtable news, the arugula continues to grow in the curly willow pot:Cute! This time I will actually use it in a salad.

Tomato is now taller than the tall phlox!See it there in the center? It's as tall as I am now. AND it's producing at least 3 or 4 grape tomatoes every day! Had three in my salad this afternoon! Deeeelish!

Phlox is going crazy this year:You might notice the tomato isn't so prominent in this one - I hadn't tied it up yet...It was drooping in this picture.

The hydrangeas in the back yard are just lovely and the daphne I planted a couple years ago is getting huge! So pretty:This is a weird angle on this one, but I wanted to show the pretty hydrangea blooms that have passed right next to the new one - I love the antique-y pinkish color they get when they start to dry out.

Evening primrose:I love those little curly guys in the middle there!

Stonecrop blooming:This plant has gotten enormous this year, too!

Nasturtiums by the little tuft of grass that came in the pot of tete-a-tetes this spring! I decided I liked the grass!

And last for today, pretty lamium blooms amonst the variegated ivy in the side yard:

Ok...I'm off like a prom dress. Gots to feed the doggies. They are stomping their feet at me!

Have a great day!

Backyard goodies

Yesterday I did not blog. I was busy. Laundry and boaty were calling to me! We spent the better part of the day out fishing on the boat! Caught a flounder! Only one, unfortunately, but tonight we're going to have fish tacos! Yumm!

Then, yesterday evening we went over to my husband's Dad's to have a cookout with the family. We had a lovely time and had many fabulous in-season vegetables including eggplant, corn, beets, a grilled onion and tomato with basil. There really is nothing like fresh, fresh food, is there? I love the summer!

In homefront news, my new mini-aloe officially has a new home now on the table in the back yard:It's very happy there.

All of the herbs are going nutso. They are getting enormous from the heat and sun and regular watering!I swear that chive plant has quadrupled in size since the spring!

The daphne bushes I put in the back yard have had different fates. One died, unfortunately, but this one is thriving:There is one area in the back that is not faring well. I'm not sure what's going on there, but the only thing that survives there is a hosta, so I may end up just putting a few hostas in that spot. I lost pulmonaria, a daphne, a peony and a bleeding heart in that spot. Gardens can be so mysterious sometimes!

The European ginger is doing fabulously in another spot in the garden! I have been told they are very slow to grow and can be quite tricky, so I feel lucky that this one is really quite happy and is growing steadily:I love those pretty, shiny leaves.

And this is so great - lamium that survived the winter in the flower boxes! I saw little green leaves when I went to switch out the flower boxes this spring, so I transplanted these sort of scraggly, sad lamiums here in the back yard! They are absolutely beautiful! They bloom constantly and are VERY happy in this spot between the daphne and huge bleeding heart bush!

Ok...That's all for today! I have a very insistent little girl standing beneath my chair wagging her rear-end off! Time for a wak!
