The Winter Funks

Boy, OH, boy. I don't know how everyone else is doing during this long, cold winter, but I'm officially in a funk.

The weather has literally been the ultimate PITS recently. Today is sort of do-able with the nice sunny sky out there, but yesterday was quite seriously one of the more miserable days in recent memory. It rained, freezing rain, ALL.DAY.LONG. It was one of the most unpleasant experiences I've had in a while, I must admit! Walking the dogs was downright treacherous. Under the newly fallen snow was a nice layer of ice. And, add freezing rain to the ice? Oh, it's quite the scene, man. It was really, really icky.

So, add to the obscenely gross weather, lack of carbs, a continued angry visit from Aunt Flo, raging hormones and a cranky husband? Recipe for a huge case of the yucks. Not the ha-ha kind of yucks, either. These are the Yucky YUCKs. The winter blues.

At least the dogs have been enjoying this winter...Look at these adorable doggies! Here they are asking to come in (after being out for quite a while - look at all that snow!):

Shaking it off!
They get all excited and flippy when they first come in from being out in the snow! It's all very fun, for some odd reason!

Here's Sadie's hairdo after being out:
If that is not cute, I don't know what is! Her hair gets all spikey on her head! Adorable!

And here's another one of her face - doesn't she look more alert?
We'd like to think this drug she's been on for two weeks is making a difference in her dementia. She seems more alert to me, anyway. She's remembering how to go down stairs again, so that's a bonus! And she's only pooped inside one time (two nights ago), as opposed to the week before she started the drug when she pooed three times in inappropriate places and peed next to the Christmas tree...Oy vey.

Anyway, she continues to be somewhat pitiful. She's still terribly slow on our walks (and slow is a nice term. She makes sloths seem downright spastic.). Here she is asleep in her dog dish:

Pitiful, right?

Unfortunately, that's about all I can muster for your reading pleasure today. Sorry it's not more pleasurable and filled with pretty flowers and stuff...I do have some pretty dried things that are on their way for a client - we're going shopping for planters next week and then I'll do up the arrangements in the planters for her. Will take pictures...

Hope you are all staying warm and dry. We are supposed to get pummeled with another 4-8 inches of snow tomorrow. Oh, JOY!

Sticking with the Day Job

OK. My predictions were not all that good. I admit it. Geez!

I did manage to get four things right - Christian Bale & Melissa Leo's win, Colin Firth's Best Actor win, and Laura Linney's Best Actress in a TV Comedy or Musical. I was particularly happy for Colin Firth. I really, really adored him in The King's Speech.

More importantly, who looked good, right? Of the men, I made note of Michael Douglas (the man looked great), Robert Downey, Jr., LL Cool J, Colin Firth, Jason Gordon Leavitt, Jeff Bridges, Jeremy Renner and surprisingly, Zac Effron!

Here is Jeremy Renner (who, by the way, was AMAZING in The Town):
Just right. Head to toe. That, gentlemen, is how it's done.

Best dressed couple easily goes to Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Both looked stunning:

My best-dressed list for the ladies included Megan Fox (another surprise), Sofia Vergara (not a surprise):
, Jennifer Lopez (she looked just right):

Haley Steinfeld:
THIS is how a child star should dress for the red carpet...

Michelle Williams:
The only thing I would change about Michelle Williams would be her posture. In every photo, she's wearing some fierce or awesome or beautiful fashion, but her shoulders are all rolled down on her chest. Push those shoulders, BACK, Michelle! You're gorgeous!

Catherine Zeta Jones (above) and Carrie Underwood.

Honorable mention and best change-up in makeup and hair in a long while goes to Emma Stone (Easy A) - I hardly recognized her!She looks feminine and pretty and that dress color really suits her new tan!

Another mention is simply for the jewelry. Helen Mirren always looks pretty fantastic - the woman is ageless. Her necklace, however, deserves an entire post of its own. The necklace was a $1.6 million dollar bauble from Cartier:
I would be SO nervous wearing that around my neck!

Now is our favorite category of fashion critique - the "Excuse me?" category. There were some doozies this year. DOOZies.

First - January Jones. For a woman THIS pretty with SUCH a great body, she really has to go some to make herself look SO bad SO consistenly! MAN! So, here's the get-up for THIS award show:
All I can say is: What?

Sheer ugliness. Unflattering in EVERY way. January, January, January. Please, girlfriend. You need to hire a new sylist. PRONTO.

Next we have lovely Julianne Moore. This is another girlfriend in need of a NEW stylist and a NEW designer to provide you with dresses. Lanvin IS NOT YOUR FRIEND, Julianne:
This looks sort of like a few satin potato sacks, sewn together rather clumsily, and then mistakenly caught in her necklace. This is NOT a good look. Not at ALL.

Christina Aguilera. Ok. I'll give you the fact that she's been having babies, she's uber-talented and is decidedly not 20-something anymore. However, this dress is accentuating all the wrong parts:
I don't know what's happened here, but she looks puffy and not like herself...In any case, I love Christina Aguilera and hope she will hire a new stylist next time. One more thing? Get rid of the bump-it hairdo. Not flattering.

Then, we have Ms. Sandra Bullock. The people with whom I was watching this year's Golden Globes would NOT believe me that THAT mess was our dear Sandra. WHAT, pray tell, was she thinking?
There is nothing about this look that is good. The hair is a disaster. The makeup? Gross. The dress? Like a gunny-sack. With barbed wire attached. Oy to the vey. I can't see the shoes. Maybe they were nice? Please, Sandra. You have a pretty face, get rid of the Goth hair and makeup and get back to your cute, wholesome image that we all adore. Can I get another Oy to the vey?

The crowning achievement in HOT MESSitude, of course, goes to Helena Bonham-Carter. No one does crazy like Helena, right?
There is just so much wrong with the look that it's hard to pinpoint what is worse? The hair? The ugly mis-matched shoes? The 70s sunglasses? The hideous dress? Oh, it all just comes together in the most absolutely atrocious way!! Kudos to Helena on getting the hands-down worst dressed of the evening! It's equally as bad as when Bjork wore the dead swan dress:
And that, my friends, is a whole different level of BAD FASHION!!!

Ok. That's all I gots for you.

Hope you enjoyed my post-Globes fashion roundup!

Happy Tuesday!

Ciao!

Big Day Predictions...

Well, kids...It's a big, big day over here at Life with Flowers. Not only do the New England Patriots play the Jets (on the way to the Superbowl, naturally), but immediately after the game, THE GOLDEN GLOBES are on!! This will require a major shift in brain function from the first to the second event, but I'm UP for it!! The cobwebs created by the yoga-torture my husband subjected me to on Thursday evening have all but cleared out and I'm READY TO GO!!!!

First prediction - the score of the game. While I am no football expert, I certainly understand the game quite well and really do enjoy it. I absolutely predict that the Pats will win over the Jets - it won't be the big blowout we had last time - but there will be a respectable score and the Pats will be victorious. I'm thinking something like 38-28 Pats. And Rex Ryan can go merrily off and lick his wife's feet for all I care. What a freak!! (Look this up if you don't know what I'm talking about - just google "Rex Ryan foot" and you will see! Blech!)

Second, lots of Golden Globe predictions. My husband and I have seen many of the movies and TV shows up for GG awards, I'm happy to say! Most years, we are dismally behind on watching new movies, so I feel a bit more comfortable in my very amateur predictions here today! And here we go:

Best Motion Picture - Drama
While we loved The Fighter, thought The Social Network was okay and HATED Inception, the most moving and well-done movie we've seen in a loooonnnnng time was The King's Speech. From beginning to end, Colin Farrell was superb. Absolutely astounding. I really, really want The King's Speech to win.

Best Actress, Motion Picture - Drama
Not sure about this. We didn't see any of these movies. So I will leave this one to the experts!

Best Actor, Motion Picture - Drama
Colin Firth. Please let it be Colin Firth. His portrayal of a stuttering, frustrated heir to the throne was beyond incredible. You felt his frustration with every fiber of your being. His final speech was a triumph and it was impossible not to cheer at the end!

Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
Only saw one of these - The Kids are All Right - and I do not think that it was award-worthy. Will leave the rest to the experts again!

Best Actress, Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
Again, saw The Kids are All Right and Easy A - and frankly, am again, surprised that either of these was nominated! Didn't see The Tourist or Love & Other Drugs, so will also leave this one blank...

Best Actor, Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
Again, up to the experts. However, must say? I adore Kevin Spacey so I will be secretly voting for him. I have a feeling, however, that Johnny Depp will win since he's nominated twice for Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist.

Best Animated Feature Film
Saw two of these and am voting heartily for How to Train Your Dragon. A completely charming tale of forgiveness and understanding!

Best Supporting Actress, Motion Picture
Melissa Leo in The Fighter. The most convincing portrayal of a fighter's "ma" from Lowell MA. Close 2nd was Amy Adams in The Fighter. She really did a fantastic job.

Best Supporting Actor, Motion Picture
Christian Bale. I have mentioned this a number of times here on this bloggy. I'm not a huge fan of Bale's. His personal life is always somewhat of a shambles, but this role he played was so far and above the others in this category - he has to win.

Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series, Mini-Series, or Made-for-TV movie
Julia Stiles, Dexter (she is the favorite; this show makes my hair stand on end, it's so well done!)

Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series, Mini-Series, or Made-for-TV movie
Chris Noth, The Good Wife (LOVED him as Big and STILL love him even though he's a low-down dirty cheater!!)

2nd choice - Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family (The entire show is brilliant and he is a bright star on it!)

Best Actress, TV - Musical or Comedy
SOOOO many good options here. My gut is to go with Laura Linney, The Big C. Close 2nds are Toni Collette, United States of Tara and Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie. I will barf if Lea Michele from Glee wins. Glee is stupid. REALLY stupid!

Best Actor, TV - Musical or Comedy
I'm thinking they will give it to Steve Carell this year since it's his last season on The Office. I love the show - love the entire cast. Neat tidbit - Rainn Wilson (who plays hilarious Dwight Schrute in The Office), is the son of my favorite yoga teacher!!

If Carell doesn't win, I'd love to see Thomas Jane win - he's brilliant in Hung.

Best Actress, TV - Drama
Tie in my head between Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men). I can't decide which deserves it more. Moss has really come on in Mad Men as a strong lead character, while Margulies has been consistently been good in her character on The Good Wife.

Best Actor, TV - Drama
Jon Hamm (Mad Men). He's just plain excellent. The series is just plain excellent!

Best TV Series - Musical or Comedy
I'm rooting for The Big C. Laura Linney and Oliver Platt are heartbreakingly wonderful. The neighbor across the street, played by Phyllis Sommerville was so incredible. It's a shame she had to die this past season. Anyway, if you have not watched this series, do yourself a huge favor and rent it.

Close 2nds are Modern Family and Nurse Jackie. My husband and I love both of these shows, as well.

Best TV Series - Drama
Mad Men. While we LOVE Dexter and The Good Wife, the acting and the interaction among the characters is hard to deny in Mad Men. It's all-around amazing.

There are other categories, but these are the ones that I know (or sort of do!), so that's it!

So, that's the big prediction post for today. We will see what ensues tonight...And, of course, we will have a run-down of the dresses and suits from the red carpet. That's really the best part, isn't it?

If you are into fashion and cattiness, then you may want to visit a very entertaining website I discovered a couple of weeks ago. It's called "Tom & Lorenzo - Fabulous & Opinionated" and can be found HERE. They review fashion houses, what the fabulous people are wearing, ad campaigns, sylists and their effectiveness. It's complete fluff and it's WONDERFUL!

Ok. That's all for today, kids. Class dismissed.

Will see you back here manana to review my predictions and the best and worst-dressed lists!

Ciao!
