Summer progress

Today it's back to being hot hot and humid. You know, for a change.

Really though? Yesterday and the day before we had a break and FINALLY some rain. It rained and rained on Friday and I was SO very happy to see it! It was a good, saturating rain and my plants were SO very thankful for it. Probably not as thankful as I was, but they were definitely feeling perkier yesterday! We're supposed to possibly get thunderstorms today, so I'm hoping that happens, as well...Bring on the rain, Mother Nature!

Also, oddly? This is the first year I can ever remember where I felt like I just wanted to stay out of the sun on certain days. Today is one of those days. The forecast yesterday said cloudy and I was all "Yipppeeee! No sun!" And then I realized that I have never felt that way ever before in my life! I must be officially getting old? Is that what that is? It's just too dang hot and humid to be in the sun this year.

In plant news, we are getting some pretty impressive things going as my perennials mature and get well-established. The phlox in the side yard has exploded in the last two days!

The echinacea that I transplanted about 6 weeks ago is also doing really well:It is planted amongst my very disobedient obedient plants that are just about ready to bloom, as well! Most exciting!

The gigantic Montauk daisy bush has just produced its first flower bud:See it tucked in there?

The flower boxes are still doing well, and the kenilworth ivy is just continuing to impress me...Though the flowers are tiny now, it just keeps growing and growing and growing! And creating such a pretty form:It fills the space at the ends of the flower boxes so nicely!

The angelonia in the flower boxes is getting HUGE now:They are not just tall (over 2 feet) but they are spreading outward, too, amongst the papyrus and pony tail grass. I love this combination.

The new balloon flowers are happy in their spot:I put 5 plants in each of the flower beds next to the back door of our house. I used to do all annuals back there, but I'm really starting to tire of the whole spending-a-fortune-on-seventy-leventy-annuals each year. Between the flower boxes, my planters, the two garden beds by the back door, and a few spots here and there in my garden, it really adds up every year. So, I am thinking it's going to be all perennials here by the back door. Maybe a few spots to tuck in a few annuals for color, but mostly it's going to be the perennial grasses, the perennial euphorbias and the balloon flowers that will be the main features of those plots by the back door now. Am I getting boring or just cheap in my old age?

And, last for today? My neighbor's planter that I did up for her!The pink million bells (calibrachoa) is just going crazy! That's one little plant that is spreading like wildfire! So pretty!

Ok. I'm off to enjoy the silence. My husband had 5 of his best friends from college here over the weekend. They just left an hour ago. It is very, very quiet in this house and the dogs and I are RATHER relieved! : )

Happy Sunday!
